Want adventure on your bike tour? Check out these five ways!

September 1, 2021

If you're new to bike touring, or are just tipping your toe into the adventure game, there are always ways to find more fun while traveling. Here are some tips from our staff.

1. Embrace the rain for a great photo.

A recent tour started with rolling thunder and impending dark skies. My group made it to a safe place where we could watch the storm roll in. We got rained on a bit, but also got some awesome photos of some beautiful weather.

2. Don't be afraid of a little wildlife.

When you're on a bike tour, it's likely you'll come across some "locals." On one of my last trips, we encountered snakes, deer, hawks, an and assortment of fish. Just stay in your "lane" and enjoy the sights!

3. Say hi to strangers!

From my vast experience while bike touring, I've learned that most people just want to be helpful-- including strangers! Take a moment to meet some people along your journey, whether that means asking for a restaurant recommendation, checking on directions, or striking up a conversation over a beer.

4. Take in the views, try the food, and sample a beverage.

If you're cycling up a large hill, you'll usually be met with breathtaking views. And, cycling long distances means traveling through places you might not otherwise even knew to exist. Be sure to take it all in, and even take time to try the local cuisine and drink. After all, you've earned it after all those miles!

5. Go off the beaten path.

Don't be afraid to get a little lost-- it can become the highpoint of the tour! I've made a few wrong turns in my day, but they've always seemed to take me just where I needed to go. It's through these path deviations that I've met more friendly locals and seen sights I didn't even know existed!

One time, I had to ask a local for directions to a hotel. He not only told me where to go, but gave me directions to an amazing restaurant off the beaten path. I had two delicious meals there, but would have never known about the place if I hadn't gotten lost!
