It's almost guaranteed you'll see more cows than cars on this supported tour, which starts at third-generation Philpott Farm in the fertile farmlands of the central Tennessee Overhill and winds its way through fields and forests toward Tellico Plains. Along the way, we'll enjoy lunch and snacks at farms and rural churches.
We'll see remnants of the old rail line from Englewood to Tellico Plains and ample remnants of times go by.
After we reach the Tellico River, we'll start a scenic climb--very, very gradual--through the Tellico River Gorge. Steep cliffs and rocky faces frame the constant view of the river as it rolls over rapids and falls. Our entire ride from this point has the soothing background noise of the river. Before long, we arrive at Bald River Falls, where we can take a break and hike to the base or top of the falls. We continue our way up the Gorge to our overnight stay at the Lodge at Green Cove, where we'll enjoy a cookout and music (and perhaps a quick dip if you're so inclined).
The next day, we make our way downhill for nearly 12 miles (!), passing through Tellico Plains into the countryside and farmland. We'll stop for a farm-fresh snack and chat with a Mennonite community elder at Tellico Farm Market and ride through the rural farming community. We continue back to our starting point at the Philpott Farm and enjoy a farm-fresh dinner at Coltharp Community Center and historic one-room schoolhouse, which this ride will raise funds for.
